About Canongate Stars and Stories

An illuminated walking trail through Edinburgh's Old Town print & publishing history - Canongate Stars and Stories

"Behold the line of blazing windows more than a mile long." - Catherine Sinclair

The Canongate has a fascinating history of writing, publishing and performance, and as a way of bringing this to light, The City of Literature Trust has partnered with organisations in the Old Town to create a walking trail which takes in lightboxes displaying quotations relating to the area.
From John Knox House down to the Scottish Parliament, visitors and residents are invited to wrap up, grab a map, and explore the Canongate and its closes in a uniquely literary way.

"Man is not truly one, but truly two." – Robert Louis Stevenson

There are 24 boxes to discover, with free maps available (from November) in partner venues and from key literary locations around the city. There will also plenty of information online about each of the writers and their work, at cityofliterature.com/starsandstories.
The Trust is also delighted to be partnering with the University of Edinburgh, Napier University and the LitLong app. LitLong allows you to explore literary Edinburgh through a map featuring nearly 50,000 excerpts from books set in Edinburgh, each of them connected to the locations they mention. So whether you want to create a trail of Irvine Welsh quotes, or find out who wrote about the area around you, LitLong is a free, easy way to enjoy Edinburgh as a city of inspiration. "Nobody left home hatless." – Muriel Spark

Canongate Stars and Stories is part of the City of Literature’s #wordsonthestreet campaign, which aims to make literature visible on the streets of Edinburgh. As the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature, the city has an incredible portfolio of books, words and ideas – the City of Literature is passionate about making these accessible to all, so they can be enjoyed by everyone.
